Nectar of the gods: Stories Behind Beehive.
Nectar of the Gods is a companion volume to the music of Beehive, exploring the journeys, encounters and inspirations behind each song.
In the song Cantar La Guitarra, there is a spider dancing on his hand of a flamenco guitarist in the park where Jean Louise Calment, the oldest documented person to have ever lived, tended her garden. In Greenstone, Jono holds a pounamu blessed by Te Whiti A Rongomai and Tohu Kākahi of Parihaka — visionary Māori leaders whose movement of non-violent resistance became a defining chapter in New Zealand History.
« The album's pilot track, Cantar La Guitarra, is complemented by almost surreal prose, in which, similarly to Jorge Luis Borges, we follow several consecutive stories encapsulated in the manner of a telescope. In the finale of the story, Jono deciphers the flamenco compás rhythm with the help of a dancing spider and comes up with his life credo: "One should take a hitchhiker, because one never knows. Maybe they're angels in disguise."
In the eighty something pages, we can also find a memory of New Zealand's Womad, including a meeting with the Roma band Taraf de Haidouks.»
